Wild, Weird and Wonderful
2nd July sees another outing for my COMA piece ‘Divisibility’, this time at East Sussex Academy in a concert including (wild, weird and wonderful) pieces by Andrew Hadfield, Patrick Harrex, Zoe Martlew, Michael Nyman, Sheena Phillips and Dave Smith.
Lost in Translation
Seven short piano pieces (including my ‘Lost in Translation‘) written for the 2009 Presteigne Festival in celebration of Haydn’s 200th and John McCabe’s 70th birthdays will be included in Clare Hammond’s recital at the Hertfordshire Music Festival on 9th June. The other composers are James Francis Brown, Peter Fribbins, David Matthews, Alan Mills, Matthew Taylor and Hugh Wood.

Urizen non-Brexit
Following their terrific performance at the Brighton Festival, Timothy Ridout and John Reid will be playing ‘Urizen‘ at the Munich Gasteig on 13th May. The concert will be broadcast by Bayerische Rundfunk on 24th June.
Not amazed
Minos’ daughter Ariadne fell in love with Theseus and helped him escape the labyrinth by following a ball of thread. He left her on Naxos of course. ‘Labyrinth‘ is a new piece for cor anglais and piano – an appropriately winding and unwinding single movement: atmospheric and dramatic, all in about 4 minutes.
Whiskies of Islay
Not an offer of drink but a concert by COMA Sussex on 18th May including not only Dave Smith’s ‘Whiskies of Islay‘ pieces but my ‘Divisibility’ and others by Michael Nyman, Zoe Martlew, Sheena Phillips, Andrew Hadfield and Patrick Harrex. As always with COMA the pieces are for flexible ensembles – bizarre, radical and entertaining!
John Hawkins studied composition with Malcolm Williamson and Elisabeth Lutyens. He has written a wide range of chamber, vocal, choral and orchestral pieces, which have been performed worldwide.
